CANTON, N.Y. – St. Lawrence University scored the final 17 points of the game to force overtime and eventually pull out a 27-24 (OT) victory over Union College in Liberty League football action on Saturday afternoon at Leckonby Stadium.
Junior
Patch Flanagan accounted for over 300 yards on the day, throwing for 107 yards and also rushing 17 times for 204 yards (12.0 yards per rush) and a touchdown. Junior
Cam Fries also rushed for a score and first-year
Francesco Pileggi connected on three field-goal attempts for Union (1-4, 0-1 Liberty League).
Daniel Lawther threw for 271 yards and three touchdowns for a St. Lawrence (2-2, 1-0 Liberty League) team that was limited to just 12 rushing yards on 20 carries. Oskar Baldwin caught seven passes for 97 yards and two touchdowns, while Clayton Fogler hit both of his field-goal attempts, including the game-winner in overtime.
Union got the ball first in overtime and an 11-yard reception by junior
Isaiah Russell brought up 1st-and-10 at the SLU 15-yard line. After a two-yard gain on first down, Flanagan's pass was tipped into the hands of Savino Morelli to give SLU a chance for the win. Despite gaining only four yards on three plays, Fogler connected from 38 yards out to give the Saints the win.
The teams traded field goals at the end of the first and start of the second quarters before Union scored the first touchdown of the game, when Flanagan ran 87 yards on the first play of the drive to put the visitors up 10-7 midway through the second stanza. The run, the fourth-longest touchdown run in program history and the longest ever by a Union quarterback, is the longest since Tom Arcidiocano '07 ran 94 yards to paydirt against Merchant Marine on October 1, 2005.
After the Saints tied the game later in the second quarter, Union seemed to take control by scoring 14 straight points to take a 24-10 lead on the first play of the fourth frame. A 47-yard run by Flanagan on the team's first play of the third quarter set up a one-yard TD run by Fries and a successful two-point rush by senior
AJ Condemi to make the score 18-10. A pair of SLU stalled drives were followed by Pileggi field goals to put the visitors up by two scores.
However, the Saints responded with a 67-yard touchdown drive on the next possession to get back within a score. Union went for it on 4th-and-1 at the SLU 30-yard line on the next possession, but an incomplete pass gave the ball back to the home team and SLU responded with a seven-play, 70-yard drive to tie the score with under three minutes remaining.
Union drove to the SLU 25-yard line in the waning seconds of regulation, but the SLU pass rush forced an intentional grounding inside the final 10 seconds to send the game to overtime.
Senior
Ethan VanderBrink had a good day on the defensive side of the ball with eight tackles, including five for loss and 2.5 sacks, while first-year
John Droggitis had a team-best and season-best 10 tackles.
Union will look to rebound next Saturday, when the team hosts Buffalo State on Homecoming and Family Weekend for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
