NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Junior
Grace Ceseretti scored a game-high 17 points to lead three Garnet Chargers in double figures as the Union College women's basketball team picked up a 67-57 win over Wheaton (Mass.) College on day two of the Lafrance Hospitality Tournament on Sunday afternoon at the Tripp Athletic Center.
Ceseretti tied the game high in scoring thanks to 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc and also tied for the team lead with six rebounds. Senior
Jenna Forman chipped in 13 points, six rebounds and two blocks to earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team, while junior
Grace Ardito added 11 points off the bench in the victory.
Union (1-1) outscored Wheaton (0-2) in three of the four periods, but needed a 23-point effort in the fourth frame to secure the victory. Heading into the final quarter trailing 45-44, senior
Claudia Porto hit a layup on the first possession to put the Garnet Chargers back in front and start a 7-0 run. After the Lyons got back within a point, Forman responded with a key three-point play and Ceseretti added two free throws and a three-pointer to build the lead back up to nine (59-50) at the midway point. The lead never fell below seven the rest of the way as Union shot 54.5 percent (6 of 11) from the field and 90.0 percent (9 of 10) from the line in the period.
Union shot 38.9 percent (21 of 54) from the field on the afternoon and also had a good day at the charity stripe, hitting 19-of-23 attempts (82.6 percent). Wheaton shot 36.4 percent (24 of 66) from the field but made just 4-of-18 long-range attempts and only got to the line eight times.
Forman hit a layup on the game's opening possession and the advantage never went higher than four on either side until a 10-0 run late in the second stanza put Union up 33-25. Senior
Emma Riley started the run with four straight points, followed by threes from Ardito and senior
Sophia Poplyk.
Union retained its lead for much of the third period until a late Wheaton run put the Lyons up by a 45-44 score after three frames, setting the stage for the Garnet Chargers to outscore their opponents by a 23-14 margin over the final 10 minutes.
Union will return to action on Tuesday, when the team heads to Utica University for a 5 p.m. tipoff with the Pioneers.
