Greco Breaks Single-Season Scoring Records in Senior Day Win

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Sophomore Maddie Greco scored 62 seconds into overtime to both break the program single-season goals and points records and lead the Union College field hockey team to a 2-1 (OT) victory over Keene State College on a brisk Saturday evening at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

With her two goals, Greco surpassed the program record of 18 goals first set by Jessica Trotter '07 in 2006 and matched by Nicole Merigliano '14 in 2013, and also eclipsed Merigliano's record of 40 points set in 2013 as well.

Union (14-5), which matches the 2008 team for the second-most wins in a season in program history, took the only two shots of overtime to pull out its eighth win in nine home games this season. An initial attempt by sophomore Molly Halliday was saved 44 seconds into the period, but the home team came back soon after. Junior Megan Dorsey got the ball on the near side of the arc and fired a long pass across the crease to Greco, who settled the ball and lifted it over the sprawling goalie for the game-winner.

The only goal of the opening half came off the stick of Greco, who weaved through multiple Owl defenders to get in front of the goal and beat goalie Clara Gorman for her 18th goal of the year. The Garnet Chargers outshot Keene State (14-6) by a 6-2 margin in the opening 30 minutes and could have scored more if not for three defensive saves by the Owls defense.

The visitors had more offensive opportunities in the second half, outshooting Union by an 8-7 margin. KSC's Irini Stefanakos evened the score with 2:13 left in the third period, finishing off a give-and-go with Grace Seabury. However, junior Sophie Brady made five saves and classmate Kat Bruun added a defensive save during a busy 30 minutes to keep the game tied and sent it to overtime.

Union finished the day with a 15-10 edge in shots and also earned 10 penalty corners to Keene State's six.

Union will return to action on Friday, when the Garnet Chargers host the University of Rochester in the Liberty League Tournament semifinals beginning at 4 p.m. at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
