TROY, N.Y. - The Union women's hockey team skated to a 3-2 overtime victory against the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Engineers Tuesday morning at Houston Fieldhouse.
Sophomore Mikayla Blomquist and seniors Maren Friday and Paige Greco scored for the Garnet Chargers while sophomore Emma Fulawka, juniors Stephanie Bourque and Mallory Mauracher, and senior Ashley Adams registered an assist apiece in the game.
The Garnet Chargers wasted little time scoring as Blomquist lit the lamp 2:54 into the first period. Blomquist fired an initial shot from the bottom of the right circle on net. The rebound popped loose from a scramble in front of the net and Blomquist quickly pounced on it, backhanding the puck into the right side of the goal.
Six minutes later, Union netted their second goal of the game. After retrieving the puck from Mauracher, Bourque fired the puck to Friday who wristed a shot from the top of the right circle through traffic into the right side of the net.
RPI quickly got one back 2:16 minutes later. Georgia Bailey shot the puck into the crease for Alyah Cioffi to tip into the net back door.
In the second period, both teams had their even share of scoring chances, with Union edging out the shot count 7-6. The Engineers had a Grade A opportunity early in the frame, and sophomore Maddie Leaney had a strong chance in the final seconds of the period, but despite the opportunities, the period ended scoreless.
In the third period, the Engineers quickly tied the game netting a goal 59 seconds in. Morgann Skoda skated in from the right side, deked Union's goalie, and potted the second goal for the Engineers.
Union ended the third period with excellent scoring chances and two power play opportunities but could not capitalize, and the game was sent to overtime.
Greco would call a game for Union 1:21 left to go in the extra period. After an effort by Ashley Adams to force the Engineers to turn the puck over, Greco picked up the loose puck, skated in on the left hand side and netted the puck on the left side. The goal marked the first career game-winning goal for Greco.
Senior goaltender Sophie Matsoukas made 19 saves in the Garnet Chargers win.
