Second Quarter Haunts Union in 74-55 Loss to SUNY Cobleskill

COBLESKILL, N.Y. – SUNY Cobleskill used a dominating second period to pull away from the Union College women's basketball team in a 74-55 victory over the Garnet Chargers in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at Iorio Gymnasium.

Junior Jelena Perovic scored a team-leading 13 points for Union (2-3), while first-year Olivia Cunningham chipped in a season-high 10 points and a team-leading eight rebounds. Senior Jenna Forman added nine points and five caroms as well for the visitors.

Annie Canales led four players in double figures for SUNY Cobleskill (7-1) with 17 points, followed by Antonia May with 16 points and 10 boards. Logan Thayne chipped in 14 points and a game-high 12 caroms as well for the home team.

Perovic scored 11 of Union's 20 points in a high-scoring opening frame, as the Garnet Chargers overcame a slow start to take a one-point lead into the second. The Fighting Tigers started the game on a 14-4 run to take a 10-point lead with 3:43 remaining, but Union closed on a 16-5 stretch to take back the lead. The visitors hit 6-of-7 shots during the run, which saw Perovic lead the way with seven points. Union scored the period's final 10 points thanks to five from Perovic as well as a three from senior Emma Riley and a Cunningham bucket to take its first lead of the contest.

Union could not carry that momentum into the second quarter, however. Cobleskill started the second period on a 17-2 run to regain control of the game, and eventually outscored Union by a 20-6 margin over the second 10 minutes to take a 39-26 lead into the half. The visitors shot 3-of-22 (13.6 percent) in the second stanza to allow the Fighting Tigers to regain their advantage.

Union hung around for much of the third frame, never allowing the deficit to grow larger than 16 until a late 5-0 run put the home team up 62-43 entering the fourth quarter. A bucket on the first possession of the fourth gave the Fighting Tigers their largest lead of the afternoon at 64-43, and the visitors could get no closer than 15 the rest of the way.

Union finished the day shooting 30.9 percent (21 of 68) from the field, compared to 43.5 percent (27 of 62) for SUNY Cobleskill.

After five straight road games to start the year, Union will finally return home on Tuesday with a 5:30 p.m. matchup against Mount Holyoke College at Viniar Athletic Center.
