Offense Comes Alive in Football's 34-13 Win over Rochester

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Junior Patch Flanagan threw for a career-high 325 yards and three touchdowns and seniors made an impact on both sides of the ball as the Union College football team defeated the University of Rochester by a 34-13 score on Senior Day at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Flanagan had the best game of his collegiate career on Saturday, completing 22-of-31 passes to seven different receivers without an interception. Junior Gil Rivera caught three passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns, while senior Robbie Tolbert caught eight of his 10 targets for 83 yards and a score, moving him into ninth place in career receptions (109) and 10th in career receiving touchdowns (15) at the school. Seniors Michael Fiore and Jonathan Anderson both ran for touchdowns as well for Union (3-6, 2-3 Liberty League), which racked up 390 yards of total offense.

The defense was led by senior Cole DaSilva, who recorded 15 tackles (seven solo) for the second straight game to give him 103 for the season, the first Union player to reach triple figures since Jake Lombardo '18 in 2017 and moving him within one tackle of a spot in the school's single-season top-10. Senior James Gillespie registered 10 tackles, an interception and a pass breakup, and classmate Emmanuel Green picked off his first collegiate pass as well for the home team.

Rochester (6-3, 2-3 Liberty League) got a good kickoff return to start the game's opening possession close to midfield, but the defense limited UR to one first down and Green picked off a pass inside the five-yard line on fourth down to get the ball back. After the teams traded punts and fourth-down stops, the Union offense struck for two touchdowns in the final 95 seconds of the half on a pair of drives that totaled just 36 seconds.

Taking over at the 42-yard line, Flanagan completed a 13-yard pass to junior Isaiah Russell and then tossed a 45-yard strike to Rivera to get Union on the board with 1:25 on the clock. Senior Max Gluck hit the extra point to earn his 100th career point and put the Garnet Chargers up 7-0. After Gillespie picked off a pass at the Union 44-yard line with 25 seconds remaining, it took the team just one play to find the end zone again as Flanagan connected with Rivera for a second time on a 56-yard strike to make the score 13-0 at the half.

After a punt on the opening drive of the third, Union scored on three of its next four possessions to put the game out of reach. A 34-yard completion from Flanagan to Russell brought Union into the red zone and eventually resulted in a two-yard plunge by Anderson to make the score 20-0. Following a Rochester three-and-out, Union marched 70 yards in nine plays, capped by a eight-yard catch by Tolbert in the left corner of the end zone.

The Yellow Jackets got on the scoreboard on their first drive of the fourth frame, but Union got the ball back on the plus-38 after two UR penalties on the kickoff and scored for the final time, with Fiore doing the honors from one-yard out.

Union will look to carry this week's momentum into the annual Dutchman Shoes game, which will take place next Saturday at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute beginning at noon.
