Four-Run Seventh Inning Propels Union to Opening Day Win

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Behind a four-run seventh-inning rally, the Union College baseball team opened the season with an 8-6 victory over SUNY New Paltz on Tuesday afternoon at Central Park A Diamond.

The win marks the first for Union head coach John Muller.

The sophomores came up big in the season opener. Sophomore Liam McIlroy went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI from the leadoff spot while classmate Andrew Keaveney registered Union's first homerun of the season with a solo blast on a day that saw him go 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI. Sophomore Cooper Ames had a timely hit in the seventh to knock in a pair of runs.

New Paltz opened the scoring with a run in each of the first two innings. Down by two, Keaveney sent a solo homerun over the center field fence to lead off the fourth inning. Back-to-back singles from sophomore Caleb Miller and Ames put runners at first and second. A fielder's choice and a throwing error by Anthony Pericolos saw Miller even the game at two. After a walk by Ryan Cowles put runners at first and second, McIlroy drove in a run on an RBI single.

The Hawks struck twice in the top of the fifth on a two-run homerun. An RBI double in the top of the sixth gave the Hawks a 5-3 lead.

Union opened the seventh with three singles in a row to load the bases. A groundout by senior Kobe Mentzer gave Ryan Cowles time to score from third. A passed ball gave McIlroy time to score from third to tie the game at five runs. With bases loaded, Ames drove a single into right field to bring in two runs. A fielder's choice brought in Union's final run of the game. New Paltz added one final run in the top of the eighth.

First-year Jack Collins got the opening day nod and allowed two runs on four hits in two innings. Senior Kyle Patlove got the win with one run on three hits and a walk on 1.1 innings of work and first-year Ethan Weitz got the save with a walk and a strikeout in 0.2 innings.

Union is back in action this weekend on the road with a four-game series at SUNY Old Westbury. First pitch is on Saturday at noon for the first of two doubleheaders.
