Schiller and Joseph Lead Union Past Roger Williams, 16-10

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – First-years Maddy Schiller and Gillian Joseph combined for 13 points as the Union College women's lacrosse team rolled to its first victory of the season with a 16-10 win over Roger Williams University in non-conference action on Monday evening at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
 
After going scoreless in the season-opener, Schiller exploded for a team-best six points on the game, scoring the first four goals of her collegiate career and adding two assists to lead Union (1-1). Joseph recorded a second-straight five-point effort to begin her career, netting a team-leading five tallies. Sophomore Maddie Doyle matched her career high with three points on two goals and an assist, and five other Garnet Chargers had one goal each.
 
Julia Kelley recorded two goals and five assists for a game-high seven points to pace Roger Williams (1-4).
 
The Garnet Chargers outshot the Hawks 10-4 in the opening quarter and scored three of the frame's four goals to take an early lead. Doyle got the scoring started 3:48 into the contest, followed by Joseph's first of the day with 9:00 left. After Allie Shamberger got RWU on the board, Schiller responded with a player-up tally to bump the lead back up to two after 15 minutes.
 
Union outscored Roger Williams 7-3 in the second stanza to increase the lead to six at the half.  Joseph had three of her tallies in the period for the home team and senior Audrey Larson added a player-down goal with 5:19 left. Schiller, senior Katie Julien and junior Sarah Murphy had the other Union goals during the period, which saw Union double up RWU in shots, 12-6.
 
The home team put the game away with the first four goals of the third period, building the lead up to as many as 10 on the second of the year from first-year Hannah Compa with 4:57 left that made the score 14-4. Roger Williams closed with the final tally of the third and outscored Union 5-2 in the fourth to make the final score seem closer than it was.
 
Union finished the game with a 38-23 edge in shots and also did very nicely from the eight-meter arc, scoring on 6-of-9 free-position shots. Sophomore Sydney Widlitz made nine saves to earn the victory in goal and first-year Anna Dembowski led the defensive effort with six ground balls.
 
Union will return to action on Wednesday, when the team starts Liberty League play with a 6 p.m. matchup against Bard College at Frank Bailey Field.
