Union Scores Twice in Ninth Inning for Walk-Off Win

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Trailing by a run going into the bottom of the ninth inning, the Union College baseball team scored twice to walk it off against St. John Fisher University to win 6-5 on Wednesday afternoon at Central Park "A" Diamond.

Sophomore Liam McIlroy tied the game at five in the ninth by scoring on a wild pitch. With runners at second and third, sophomore Caleb Miller lined a single into centerfield for the walk-off win.

McIlroy and senior Kobe Mentzer each registered two hits in the win. Mentzer recorded an RBI and a run scored while McIlroy crossed home twice.

The Garnet Chargers opened the scoring in the second inning. Sophomore Caleb Miller opened the inning with a leadoff walk then advanced to second on a passed ball. After junior Dan Sheeran grounded out to move Miller to third, the sophomore catcher raced home on a wild pitch in the following at-bat to give Union a 1-0 lead.

The Cardinals plated three runs in the fourth inning. After loading the bases, an RBI single tied the game at one. A single one batter later drove in two runs to give the visitors a two-run lead.

Union battled back in the seventh inning with three runs. After loading the bases, senior Thomas Parisi made it to first on a fielder's choice. A throwing error by Noah Pohrte gave junior Ryan Cowles time to cross home. A wild pitch brought McIlroy across home and a second wild pitch put Parisi on third. Mentzer dropped an RBI single into center field for the go-ahead run.

The Cardinals loaded the bases in the top of the ninth, prompting a pitching change for Union. A walk brought in the game-tying run before an RBI single put the visitors up 5-4.

Union scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to come away with the walk-off win.

Junior Chris Suter started his third game of the season and pitched five complete innings. Suter struck out four batter and allowed three runs on two hits. Junior Aidan McGee pitched three innings and allowed two runs on two hits with a pair of strikeouts. Junior Alex Erickson earned the win with one hit and no runs in one inning of work.
