AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Union College baseball team ended their spring break trip on a high note with an 11-8 win over Purchase College on Tuesday afternoon in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
Junior
Sam Strazza was a single short of the cycle and went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Senior
Kobe Mentzer also registered two extra-base hits with a double and a homerun with three runs scored and an RBI.
The Garnet Chargers scored in the top of the second. Sophomore
Liam McIlroy hit a sac fly with bases loaded to bring Union's first run in. The Garnet Chargers added four runs in the top of the third to take a 5-0 lead. After loading the bases, sophomore
Caleb Miller singled to drive in a run and advanced to second on a throwing error. Junior
Kyle Zaslaw hit an RBI single before Strazza drove in a pair of runs with a triple.
Mentzer registered a double in the fourth inning and sophomore
Andrew Keaveney knocked an RBI single to extend the lead. Union added two more runs in the fifth. Strazza hit his first homerun of the season. McIlroy add an RBI single later in the frame.
Purchase broke through in the bottom of the fifth. With a runner on third, a wild pitch gave Myles Scarry time to race home. Union was quick to respond with a leadoff homerun by Mentzer in the top of the sixth.
Purchase scored a run in the bottom of the eighth to make it a 9-2 game. Union tacked on two runs in the top of the ninth with back-to-back RBI singles by first-years
Noah DiCaprio and
Dillon Aery. Purchase added six runs in the bottom of the ninth to make it an 11-8 game.
Sophomore
Jack Klein picks up his first win of the season with only two hits in three innings of work. Senior
Bryce Fournier earned his first save of the season after getting the last two outs in the ninth and worked out of a bases-loaded jam.
Union returns north to open Liberty League conference play on Friday at home.
