ORLANDO, Fla. – Despite dropping their first match of Spring Break to begin the day, the Union College women's tennis team rallied for an afternoon victory and a split of Tuesday action on the final day of Spring Break at the USTA National Campus. Union fell to DePauw University by a 6-3 score before defeating St. Olaf College by the same score.
Sophomore
Skylar Semon and first-year
Luisa Arizpe-Sierra led Union (5-3) with three wins apiece on the day, followed by sophomores
Chara Meidani and
Kennedy Alexis with two victories each.
Union dropped its first match of Spring Break to begin the day, as three supertiebreakers and one second-set tiebreak all went the way of the Tigers to give DePauw a 6-3 victory.
All three doubles matches were very tightly contested to start the match, with one break and two tiebreakers all that separated the two teams. Alexis and Arizpe-Sierra earned the lone doubles point for Union with an 8-7 (8-6) win at the second flight, saving a match point at 5-6 in the breaker before storming back for the win. But DePauw pulled out an 8-6 win at the top flight and an 8-7 (7-5) third-flight win to take the lead into singles play.
Semon quickly evened the score for Union with a 6-1, 6-3 win at fifth singles. However, three of the next four matches finished in a superbreaker and all of them went to DePauw. Juniors
Gracie Nicol (first singles) and
Gabby Gatto (fourth singles) both fought back from a set down to force the supertiebreak but came up short, as did Arizpe-Sierra at the third flight. Sophomore
Claire Langille put up a fight at sixth singles despite rolling her ankle in the first game, nearly coming back from an 0-3 hole in the second set before falling, 6-0, 7-6 (7-5).
Meidani was the lone Garnet Charger to see a supertiebreaker go her way, as she outlasted Kassie Green at the second flight, 7-6 (8-6), 2-6, (10-7).
Union rebounded nicely from the loss to end the trip, handing St. Olaf its first loss of the season with a 6-3 victory.
The Garnet Chargers used a pair of doubles wins to take the early momentum in the final match of Spring Break. Semon and junior
Paige Tromblee earned the first point of the day with an 8-3 third-doubles win, while Alexis and Arizpe-Sierra fought hard in an 8-7 (7-4) second-doubles victory.
Meidani kept the momentum going in singles play with a 6-0, 6-2 second-singles win, followed soon after by sophomore
Sydney Alphabet stepping into the sixth-singles role and coming away with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph. Semon clinched the win with a 6-1, 6-3 win at the fifth flight and Arizpe-Sierra finished off her third-singles opponent in a supertiebreaker, 6-1, 4-6, (12-10) to complete the scoring for Union.
After taking some time to enjoy the rest of Spring Break, Union will head back north before returning to action on April 4 at SUNY Oneonta.
