POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team split a Liberty League doubleheader against Vassar College on Saturday afternoon at Prentiss Baseball Field. Union fell in game one, 14-5, but bounced back to take game two 15-5 to ultimately take the season series with the Brewers after an 11-9 win on Friday in Schenectady.
Game One: Vassar 14, Union 5
Vassar limited Union to just six hits with senior
Thomas Parisi recording two of them. Parisi also registered two RBIs.
Union jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second innings. After loading the bases, senior
Ryan Cowles knocked an RBI single down the right field line. A wild pitch saw junior
Kyle Zaslaw score from third and Parisi followed up with an RBI double down the left field line to drive in two runs. Vassar cut the lead to three runs with a sac fly for a score. The Brewers added a second run in the bottom of the third to make it a two-run game. Senior Kobe
Mentzer added a run when he drew a bases-loaded walk.
The Brewers tacked on nine runs in the fifth inning and added three more in the bottom of the eighth.
Sophomore
Alex Oppenheimer fell to 3-1 on the season. Oppenheimer pitched 4.2 innings with six runs, three earned, on four hits, and two strikeouts. Junior
Aidan McGee pitched the final 3.1 innings and allowed eight runs, two earned, on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Game Two: Union 15, Vassar 5
Senior
Sebastian Pike hit his first career grand slam in game two to highlight a big game for the senior. Pike went 2-for-3 with five RBIs, and two runs scored. Mentzer and Zaslaw also recorded a multi-hit game in the second game.
Cowles opened the scoring with a sac fly in the top of the second inning to give Union a 1-0 lead. Vassar struck back with two runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead.
The Garnet Chargers added four runs in the third to take a 5-2 lead. Sophomore
Andrew Keaveney hit an RBI single. Sophomore
Cooper Ames hit Union's second sac fly of the game to take a 3-2 lead. Sophomore
Dan Sheeran drew a bases-loaded walk to bring another run in before Keaveney scored on a groundout by Cowles.
The first three batters in the fourth inning walked to load the bases. Pike hit a homerun to left center for his first career grand slam to give Union a commanding 9-2 lead. Cowles hit an RBI double to cap off the scoring in the inning.
Vassar added a run in both the fifth and sixth inning. Union tacked on three runs in the seventh inning starting with an RBI single by Mentzer. Sophomore
Liam McIlroy capitalized on a throwing error and Pike followed up with an RBI single through the left side.
The Brewers scored their final run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single and the Garnet Chargers tacked on two more in the top of the ninth. McIlroy scored on a wild pitch and Ames hit his second sac fly of the game.
First-year
Jack Collins picked up his second win. Collins pitched six complete innings and allowed four runs, three earned, on 12 hits with two strikeouts.
Union returns home for a non-conference game against Russell Sage College on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Central Park "A" Diamond.
