Comeback Falls Short for Women's Lacrosse at #20 Ithaca

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Union College women's lacrosse team saw its late-game rally come up a few goals short in an 11-9 loss to #20 Ithaca College in a Liberty League matchup on Saturday afternoon at Higgins Stadium.

Senior Katie Julien and first-year Gillian Joseph both had a team-leading three goals apiece for Union (4-4, 2-2 Liberty League), with Julien adding an assist for a team-best four points. Junior Greta Maurer chipped in a goal and two assists as well for the visitors.

Ithaca (7-1, 3-0 Liberty League) was led by Maizy Veitch with a game-high five points (one goal, four assists) and a game-best four goals from Sydney Phillips.

Union hung with Ithaca for almost the entirety of the game, falling one goal short in each of the first three periods before outscoring the Bombers by one in the fourth. Goals by Julien and Maurer kept the game tied at two in the first before a late tally put the Bombers up by one. Julien netted a player-down goal midway through the second stanza to tie the score at three, but Ithaca tallied the final two goals of the period to start a prolonged 7-2 run that put the home team up 10-5 with 9:51 to go in the fourth.

The Garnet Chargers closed the game on a 4-1 run, including the final three goals of the fourth frame, but could get no closer after a goal by first-year Maddy Schiller with 1:45 on the clock.

Union stayed in the game thanks to an efficient offense that scored nine times on just 16 total shots, compared to 37 shots for Ithaca. Sophomore Sydney Widlitz made 16 saves to keep her team in the game, while sophomore Claudia Patz led the defensive unit with three ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Union will return to action on Friday at 5:30 p.m. with a matchup against Skidmore College at Frank Bailey Field.
