#8 Union Drops Second Straight at #5 St. Lawrence, 12-6

CANTON, N.Y. – The #8 Union College men's lacrosse team suffered a second-straight setback on Saturday afternoon, falling to #5 St. Lawrence University by a 12-6 score in Liberty League action at Hall-Leet Stadium.

Senior Peter Kip led Union (7-2, 1-1 Liberty League) with two goals and two assists, but he was the only Garnet Charger to record more than one point on the afternoon. Judge Murphy led all players with four goals and two assists for St. Lawrence (10-0, 2-0 Liberty League).

Union was unable to get any sustained momentum over the first 30 minutes OF play, scoring four goals and putting just eight shots on goal. After two SLU tallies to start the game, Kip got Union on the board 3:29 into the contest, but the Saints responded five seconds later to regain a two-goal edge. Senior Zach Davis made it a 3-2 game with 8:43 left, but the visitors went nearly 15 minutes without a goal before sophomore Matt McKenzie made it a 4-3 game with 8:54 left in the second.

After two St. Lawrence goals, Kip gave the visitors some momentum headed into halftime with his second of the game to make the score 6-4 at the half, and the defense kept SLU off the board for nearly 12 minutes to start the third while senior Jake Mabardy scored to make it a one-goal game with 3:55 left. However SLU had a decisive answer, scoring three goals in the final 3:04 of the period and then adding three in a row to start the fourth frame that gave the Saints control of the contest.

Shots were relatively even for both sides, with SLU gaining a 41-33 edge. Senior Dan Donahue made 13 saves and SLU goalie Michael Marinello had eight saves.

Union will return to action next Saturday with a conference matchup against Ithaca College starting at noon in Schenectady.
