SCHOHARIE, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team erupted for 21 runs in a 21-2 nonconference victory over SUNY Cobleskill on Friday night.
Six different batters registered a double in the win. Senior
Kyle Zaslaw went 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored and five RBI. Sophomore
Liam McIlroy hit his second homerun of the season.
After a scoreless first inning, Union jumped on the board in the second with three runs. With bases loaded, Zaslaw hit a sac fly to left field to bring in Union's first run of the night. Senior
Ryan Cowles sent a two-run RBI single into left field to put the visitors up by three.
The Garnet Chargers crossed home eight times in the third inning to go up 11-0. Senior
Thomas Parisi drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. An RBI single by senior
Kobe Mentzer brought Parisi home. Union loaded the bases and walked in a run before Zaslaw drove in three runs with an RBI double. After Cowles was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second, McIlroy hit his second homerun of the year. Cobleskill responded with a run in the bottom of the frame. With runners on the corners, a groundout to second put the Fighting Tigers on the board.
The Garnet Chargers added two more runs in the fifth inning and one in the sixth inning to extend the lead. Union plated five runs in the seventh. Junior
Sam Strazza lined an RBI single to center field and Zaslaw followed it up with an RBI single. A double by sophomore
JT Psirogianes drove in a pair of runs. Back-to-back doubles added another run for Union. The Fighting Tigers plated one in the bottom of the inning off an RBI double.
Union scored their final two runs in the eighth inning. With runners on first and second, junior
Sam Strazza hit an RBI single to right field. First-year
Ben Raphael grounded out to first, but classmate
Brody McCabe raced home for the score.
Junior
Chris Suter picked up his second win of the season. Suter pitched five complete innings and allowed one run on three hits while fanning three. First-year
Garrick Godin made his collegiate debut with one hit and one strikeout in an inning of work.
Union is back in action on Sunday with a doubleheader against City College of New York. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Central Park "A" Diamond.
