ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team extended their win streak to six games with a 16-2 win over Bard College on Friday afternoon at Honey Field.
Union (19-6, 6-3) earned their first win at Bard (5-21, 0-11) since May 8, 2021. The 19
th win of the season for the Garnet Chargers is the most since the 2018 won 31 games.
Sophomore
Caleb Miller registered a hit in his 14
th consecutive game and went 3-for-6 with three RBIs and a run scored. Senior
Ryan Cowles also recorded three hits with an RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore
Liam McIlroy hit his league-leading eighth homerun of the season.
Union opened the scoring in the first inning with two runs on the board. After the first two batters struck out, senior
Kobe Mentzer singled up the middle and made it to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore
Andrew Keaveney drew a walk and Miller lined an RBI single to left center to put runenrs on the corners. Junior
Kyle Zaslaw followed up with an RBI single through the right side. Union added two more runs in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead.
The Garnet Chargers added another run in the third inning. The team loaded the bases and senior
Thomas Parisi hit a sac fly to center field for Union's fifth run of the game.
The offense exploded in the final two innings to add 11 runs to the board. The eighth inning saw Union plate six runs. Cowles hit an RBI single to put Union up by six with runners on the corners. McIlroy hit his eighth homerun of the season to add three more runs. Union loaded the bases again and Zaslaw hit a sac fly to put Union at double digits. The Garnet Chargers loaded the bases for a second time in the inning and Keaveney scored on a wild pitch.
Bard broke the shutout bid in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Raptors loaded the bases and Hannan hit a two-run RBI double down the left field line.
Union tacked on five more runs in the top of the ninth inning. Cowles hit a leadoff triple to right field and an RBI groundout by McIlroy brought Cowles home. A few batters later, another RBI groundout put Mentzer on third. Miller hit a two-run blast for his second homerun of the season. Zaslaw and junior
Sam Strazza both drew walks and junior
Dan Sheeran hit an RBI single to center field to cap the scoring.
Junior
Chris Suter (4-2) earned his fourth win of the season after pitching five scoreless innings. Suter surrendered four hits and struck out four. Junior
Cal Place closed out the final four innings and allowed two runs on six hits while striking out a career-high six batters. Aidan Risse (1-6) suffered the loss for the Raptors with five runs in six innings of work.
The series heads to Schenectady for a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Central Park A Diamond.
