POTSDAM, N.Y. - After Clarkson scored nine of the first 10 runs in their doubleheader with Union on Saturday, the Garnet Chargers responded with 16 unanswered to shutout the Golden Knights in game two, 12-0, after dropping game one, 9-5.
Â
In collaboration with Union's offensive attack in game two, junior
Melody Kappel threw the second shutout of her career. She allowed just two hits, less than any amount allowed in an appearance of more than two innings this season, while walking three and striking out three. The Greenville native has not allowed an earned run in three consecutive appearances and 15.2 innings pitched.
Â
In the victory, eight of Union's nine starting hitters registered at least one hit, with all nine reaching base safely. Juniors
Riley Callahan and
Nahnny Sobetzko led the way from the top of the order with two hits apiece, while sophomore
Ellie Wintringer followed right behind them with three runs batted in and a pair of walks.Â
Â
Game One: Clarkson 9, Union 5
Â
Game one of the doubleheader was a tale of two halves. The Golden Knights opened up an eight-run lead in the first three innings before Union responded with four unanswered to cut their deficit in half, but that was as close as their comeback would come.
Â
With Clarkson leading 2-0 after the first, first-year
Sam Rose lined an RBI single to score junior
Tatum Perkins to make it 2-1.
Â
Clarkson put up six in the home half and one more in the third before Union turned the bats on.
Â
Wintringer scored on an error in the fourth after her leadoff double before Perkins singled in Kappel in the fifth to make it 9-3. In the seventh, Kappel singled to score sophomore
Elizabeth Werner following her leadoff double before later crossing home on Perkins' third hit of the afternoon, but Clarkson would hold on to finish off the victory.
Â
Game Two: Union 12, Clarkson 0
Â
After a quiet first two scoreless innings, Union opened the floodgates with a nine-spot in the third.Â
Â
Perkins drove in Sobetzko with a sacrifice fly to get things started before six consecutive Garnet Chargers reached base safely- all via single or base on balls- to make it 5-0 and keep the bases full. Wintringer then unloaded the bases in her second at-bat of the inning, driving in two with her single before a Clarkson error allowed Callahan to cross home safely. Wintringer then was the beneficiary of another Golden Knights error, coming around to score from first to give Union a nine-run lead after two and a half.
Â
Union closed out the game with three more in the fifth. Sobetzko drove an RBI double to right to bring in Kappel and push the lead to double digits before back-to-back run-scoring groundouts from Wintringer and Perkins made it a dozen.
Â
Kappel closed out her gem in the bottom of the fifth, getting a double play to end the ballgame.
Â
Union (5-15) continues their North Country swing Saturday, when they take on St. Lawrence beginning at 1:00 p.m.
