Zaslaw Homers Twice in Victory Over Mount Saint Mary

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Junior Kyle Zaslaw hit two homeruns as the Union College baseball team recorded their 10th consecutive win as the Garnet Chargers defeated Mount Saint Mary College 12-3 on Wednesday afternoon at Central Park A Diamond.

The 10-game win streak is the longest since the team won 10 in a row between March 25, 2016 and April 16, 2016.

Sophomore Caleb Miller recorded a hit in his 18th consecutive game for the longest program hitting streak since at least 2013. Senior Thomas Parisi extended his hit streak to 10 games.

Zaslaw led the way, going 3-for-3 with five RBIs and three runs scored. Parisi, sophomore Andrew Keaveney, and senior Ryan Cowles each recorded two hits in the win. Defensively, the Garnet Chargers turned three double plays.

Union jumped out to an early read with four runs in the first inning. The Garnet Chargers loaded the bases and Miller hit a sac fly to right field to bring in one run. Zaslaw stepped up one batter later and hit a three-run home run.

After a scoreless second inning, Union added to their lead in the third. Keaveney singled to center field and Miller drove an RBI triple to center. Zaslaw came up big again with a two-run homerun to give Union a 7-0 advantage after three innings.

The Knights put runners on the corners in the fourth and capitalized on a fielding error to break the shutout bid.

Union responded with back-to-back single in the fourth followed by a pair of stolen bases by sophomore Liam McIlroy and Parisi. Senior Kobe Mentzer hit a sac fly to right field to drive in a run. Keaveney recorded an RBI double to make it a 9-1 game.

Union crossed the double-digit threshold for the 15th time this season in the fifth inning. Zaslaw hit a leadoff double and made it to third on a wild pitch. Junior Sam Strazza hit an RBI single for Union's tenth run. Senior Sebastian Pike and Cowles recorded back-to-back singles to make it 11-1 after five.

Neither team recorded a run in the next two innings, but the Knights tried to mount a comeback in the eighth. A leadoff walk was followed by a pair of doubles and a single to make it 11-3. Senior Bryce Fournier struck out the fifth batter in the inning and the defense turned a double play to end the inning.

The Knights registered a hit in the ninth, but a strikeout by senior Kyle Patlove put an out on the board. The defense turned their third double play of the day to end the game.

Junior Cal Place earned his third win of the season with no hits in three scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Junior Alex Erickson struck out three with one run, unearned, in one inning of work. First-year Brendan Reid, sophomore Will Collins, and first-year Ethan Weitz each threw a scoreless inning. Fournier struck out one while surrendering two runs on three hits. Senior Kyle Patlove slammed the door with a scoreless ninth inning with one hit and a strikeout.

Union returns to conference play on Friday with a solo game at Skidmore College. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at David Alexander Castle Diamond at Ingram Park.
