Women's Lacrosse Comes Up Short to St. John Fisher, 13-7

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's lacrosse team had its five-game winning streak come to a halt in the penultimate game of the regular season, falling to non-conference foe St. John Fisher University by a 13-7 score on Friday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

Sophomore Maddie Doyle and first-year Gillian Joseph scored two goals apiece to lead Union (9-5), but the home team managed only 19 total shots and 13 on-target attempts to suffer its first loss to a non-nationally ranked team this season.

Cara Landry scored a game-high four goals and Sydney Carpenter recorded a goal and four assists for a game-high five points to pace St. John Fisher (7-7).

The Cardinals put Union in an early hole that the Garnet Chargers could never dig out of, scoring six of the first quarter's seven goals to take control of the game. The visitors scored on six of their eight shots in the opening frame, while senior Audrey Larson scored the only tally for the home team on one of its two shots in the period.

Union outscored St. John Fisher 2-1 in a low scoring second stanza and got back within three after Joseph's second of the game with 3:03 remaining in the third period. However, the Cardinals re-assumed control by scoring three times in the final 2:15 to take a 10-4 lead into the fourth.

Goals from Doyle and first-year Hannah Compa brought Union back within four (10-6) with 6:41 on the clock, but two goals in less than a minute helped put the game away for the visitors. First-year Dauphine Michel added a late goal for the Garnet Chargers as well.

Sophomore Sydney Widlitz made six saves for Union in a losing effort, while Maggie Cross made four saves in relief to earn the win for the Cardinals.

Union will finish off the regular season and honor the team's Class of 2024 tomorrow with a 2 p.m. contest against the University of Rochester.
