SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Union College women's tennis team put up a good fight against #38 Skidmore College, but eventually came up a few sets short in a 6-3 loss on Friday night at the McCaffrey-Wagman Tennis and Wellness Center.
Despite the loss, Union (9-7, 3-4 Liberty League) still controls its own destiny in the hunt for the postseason. The Garnet Chargers will earn a spot in the Liberty League Tournament with a victory over Rochester Institute of Technology tomorrow. Skidmore (9-5, 6-1 Liberty League) remains in a tie for second place in the conference standings.
First-year
Luisa Arizpe-Sierra continued her excellent rookie season with two wins to lead the Garnet Chargers, earning a win at second singles and at second doubles alongside sophomore
Kennedy Alexis. Fellow sophomores
Claire Langille and
Skylar Semon also earned a win at third doubles for the visitors.
Union started the match strongly, taking two of three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead into singles play. At the second flight, Alexis and Arizpe-Sierra earned an early break to take a 4-1 lead and stayed on serve the rest of the way to earn an 8-5 victory over Beilynn Geiss and Katie Wong. Langille and Semon followed with a hard-fought 8-7 (7-4) win over Colette Prokop and Ella Provost at third doubles, shaking off a late break of serve to earn the win in a tiebreaker.
The Thoroughbreds quickly regained control by winning the bottom two singles flights to take back the lead at 3-2. Wins at first and fourth singles clinched the victory for the home team, followed by a first-singles win. Arizpe-Sierra prevented the singles sweep with a hard-fought victory at second singles, defeating Grace Truong in a supertiebreaker, 6-0, 4-6, (10-7).
Union will look to clinch a postseason berth tomorrow, when the Garnet Chargers honor their graduating seniors before a 1 p.m. match against Rochester Institute of Technology at the Union Tennis Courts.
