SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Union College men's tennis team put up a great fight against Skidmore College in the team's 2023-24 season finale on Sunday morning, coming up just short in a 5-4 loss at the McCaffrey-Wagman Tennis and Wellness Center.
Despite not picking up the victory, Union (4-12, 2-6 Liberty League) had its best showing against its fellow Capital Region school in nearly 40 years, since a 5-4 win for Union in 1985. Six players recorded one win each for Union on the day.
The Garnet Chargers got off to an excellent start on Sunday, taking two of three doubles matches and coming one break short of forcing a tiebreaker in the third. Senior
Dimitris Binopoulos and junior
Ben Jacobs earned the first point of the day with an 8-6 win over Nika Mori and Fletcher King, earning a late break to secure the first-doubles win. After Skidmore (5-11, 4-4 Liberty League) evened the score at second doubles, juniors
Austin Gregory and
Seth Prusko grinded out an 8-7 (7-4) third-doubles win over Adel Aissaoui and Kyle Lundberg, scoring five of the tiebreaker's first six points to take the victory.
Following two Skidmore wins that put the Thoroughbreds ahead early in singles play, first-year
Solen Bellemare evened the match at three with a 6-3, 6-2 fifth-singles win over King. Unfortunately second singles and fourth singles both went the way of the home team to complete the victory, although senior
Khai Ton got one more point for the visitors with a 6-3, 6-2 win at sixth singles over Aissaoui.
