TROY, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team continued Liberty League play with a doubleheader split against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday afternoon at Robison Field. Union (13-5, 3-2) fell in game one 5-3, before coming back to win 2-1 in game two.
Game 1: Union 3, RPI 5
Senior
Thomas Parisi and sophomore
Caleb Miller each put together a multi-hit effort in game one with three and two hits, respectively.
Union struck early in the game with two runs in the first inning. After sophomore
Liam McIlroy reached first on an error by Matt Chotiner, Miller hit his second triple of the year to drive in a run. Senior
Sebastian Pike hit a sac fly to right field to put Union up 2-0.
RPI (12-7, 6-2) took the lead in the bottom of the second. With two runners on, Stephen Koval hit a homerun into left field. Union tied it up in the next inning. After a leadoff double by McIlroy and a single by senior
Kobe Mentzer to put runners on the corners, Pike hit his second sac fly of the game to knot the game at three.
The Engineers took a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run homerun into right field by Martin Marintchev. Union put runners into scoring position in the seventh and the ninth, but RPI held on to take game one.
Junior
Chris Suter pitched a complete game with five runs on seven hits and four strikeouts.
Game 2: Union 2, RPI 1
Game two was a pitching duel between the two teams with only 12 hits combined between the route 7 rivals. First-year
Jack Collins earned the win with six strikeouts in eight innings with one run on two hits. Junior
Alex Erickson earned the save with one hit and three strikeouts.
Senior
Ryan Cowles had three of Union's hits in game two with an RBI and a run scored.
After four scoreless innings, Union got on the board first. A fielding error put Cowles on first and back-to-back singles loaded the bases. Pike singled through the left side for his third RBI in the series.
A scoreless sixth inning gave way to a one-run seventh inning when Anthony Brigante entered the game as a pinch hitter and hit a solo homerun into right field.
Sophomore
Andrew Keaveney drew leadoff walk in the eighth and junior
Nico Lambros went in to pinch run. Parisi was hit by a pitch to move Lambros to second. Cowles lined an RBI single through the right side to drive in the eventual game-winning run.
Union closes out the series tomorrow with a noon first pitch against the Engineers at Central Park "A" Diamond in Schenectady.
