SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's tennis team battled hard against ITA #31 Hobart College on Sunday, sending several matches past the second set in an 8-1 Liberty League defeat at Sportime Tennis Club.
Union (3-8, 1-2 Liberty League) did not make it easy for Hobart (10-3, 4-0 Liberty League) on Sunday, with one match reaching a third set, two others going to supertiebreakers, and one more coming a second-set tiebreak away from another extra frame.
The highlight of the match for Union came at first singles, where junior
Ben Jacobs knocked off Sean Pesin, ranked 18th in the ITA Northeast Regional rankings, in a supertiebreaker. He fought back from 2-4 and 4-5 down in the first set to prevail in the final three games and take a 7-5 win. Despite Pesin winning the second set by a 7-5 margin to extend the match, Jacobs never trailed in the supertiebreaker, closing with three of the final four points with the breaker tied at seven in a 10-8 win.
The Garnet Chargers also split the first two sets at second and fourth singles as well. Senior
Dimitris Binopoulos came back from dropping the first set to take the second from Nicholas Fischer in an eventual three-set defeat, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. Classmate
Khai Ton also rebounded a first-set loss to force a supertiebreaker against Hyat Oyer at the fourth flight, falling in a marathon breaker, 6-3, 5-7, (15-13).
In addition, first-year
Daniel Saxe came a tiebreaker short of forcing a third set against Achilleas Kousaridis at third singles, dropping a 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) match.
The Garnet Chargers return home on Friday for a big Liberty League match against St. Lawrence University beginning at 2:30 p.m. at the Union Tennis Courts.
