Women's Lacrosse Falls to #7 William Smith in Liberty League Semis

GENEVA, N.Y. – The third-seeded Union College women's lacrosse team was knocked out of the Liberty League Tournament with a 13-3 loss to second-seeded and #7 William Smith College in the semifinal round on Friday afternoon at Urick Stadium.

Senior Dana Nelson, sophomore Lana Mickelson and first-year Hannah Compa all scored for Union (11-6), while William Smith (17-2) was paced by Natalie Daniels with five goals and Maddie Montgomery with three tallies.

Both teams had plenty of chances in the opening 15 minutes, with the Herons posting a 10-8 edge in shots. However, the home team scored four times and Maura Smeader made five saves to help William Smith to a 4-1 lead after one period. The Herons then outscored Union 5-1 in the second stanza to take a commanding 9-2 lead headed into halftime.

Union limited William Smith to only four goals in the final 30 minutes, but the Garnet Chargers could only get one more goal past Smeader on six second-half shots.

William Smith finished the game with a 31-18 edge in shots. Smeader made 10 saves while sophomore Sydney Widlitz made nine stops for the visitors.
