Softball's Season Concludes at Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Union College softball team wrapped up their 2024 season with a doubleheader at the University of Rochester Saturday, falling to the Yellowjackets in game one, 13-2, and game two, 7-2.

First-Year Sophia Burynski tallied the first three-hit game of her career in game one, going 3-for-3 with Union's two runs. The rookie concludes her first-year campaign with hits in her last four starts and multi-hit games in her last three starts, going 8-for-13 (.615) with three runs scored, two more driven in, and her first two collegiate doubles in those four games.

Game One: Rochester 13, Union 2 (5 Innings)

Union got their two runs in the first and third innings of game one of the doubleheader, but Rochester responded with multiple runs in the bottom half of each inning to take the lead and a massive eight-run fourth to put the Garnet Chargers away.

A trio of singles from Burynski, junior Nahnny Sobetzko, and sophomore Haley Gibbons turned into a run to give Union the lead before Rochester came to bat. A leadoff home run in the bottom of the first tied the game however before Rochester added two more to take a 3-1 lead after one.

Burynski would pick up her second hit of the day to lead off the third, and came around to score thanks to a sacrifice bunt from Sobetzko, ground out, and an error. Rochester wasted no time getting runs back though, using a two-out, two-run double to hold a 5-2 advantage.

Union had a prime opportunity to get themselves back in the ballgame in the top of the fourth, loading the bases with no one out, but a line drive that turned into a double play and a batted ball that hit a Union runner allowed the Yellowjackets to escape without any damage.

They took advantage of their opportunity in the bottom of the fourth, scoring eight unearned runs to close out the run-rule victory.

Game Two: Rochester 7, Union 2

Rochester climbed out to a 7-0 lead through five innings before Union attempted to use a late-game comeback to get back into game two.

The Yellowjackets used a run-scoring single in the first and a two-RBI double in the fourth before getting a two-run home run, two-run double, and RBI single in the fifth as Union's offense sputtered to just one hit.

Union's offense awoke as Rochester turned to the bullpen. First-Year Cassie Wiggins led off with a single before junior Riley Callahan drew a one-out walk, and Sobetzko and junior Tatum Perkins drove in runs to put the Garnet Chargers on the board.

First-Year Sam Rose led off the seventh looking to continue the rally with a double, but the next three Union batters were retired in order to finish the ballgame.

Union's (6-26) 2024 season draws to a close with a sixth-place finish in the Liberty League standings, and with no seniors on their current roster, will be poised to return to the postseason in 2025 with all 13 players due back.
