ITHACA, N.Y. – The fifth-seeded Union College women's tennis team had the most successful season in program history come to a close in the semifinals of the Liberty League Tournament on Saturday afternoon, falling to top-seeded and #34 Vassar College by a 5-0 score at Cornell University's Reis Tennis Center.
Union (11-8) fell behind early as Vassar (16-3) swept the three doubles points. Senior
Gracie Nicol and sophomore
Chara Meidani almost grabbed a point for Union at the top flight, coming back from a 5-2 deficit to take a 7-6 lead before Vassar held serve to force a tiebreaker and eventually escaped with an 8-7 (7-1) victory.
The Brewers earned wins at first and fourth singles to finish off the victory, led by ITA #30 Erin McCusker with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Nicol at the top flight.
Among the four matches that went unfinished, Meidani took the first set 6-4 from Iris Li and was trailing 5-3 in the second set of their third-singles matchup. First-year
Luisa Arizpe-Sierra was leading 3-2 in the second set after dropping the first to Macey Dowd at second singles, while sophomore
Sydney Alphabet also had a 3-2 second-set advantage over Elyse Duley after dropping the first set of their sixth-singles matchup.
The match wraps up the most successful season in program history for Union, winning a record 11 matches and earning its first conference tournament victory in two decades. With six of their seven lineup regulars set to return next season, the Garnet Chargers will look to improve on this year's success in 2024-25.
