Volleyball Finishes California Trip with Loss to Cal Lutheran

LA VERNE, Calif. – The Union College women's volleyball team dropped its final match at the Pacific Coast Classic on Saturday morning, falling to California Lutheran University by a 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 28-26) score at the University of La Verne's Sports Science Athletic Pavilion.

First-year Georgia Pinciaro led Union (1-2) with a match-high 10 kills, while junior Shannon McGrath just missed a double-double with nine kills to go with 11 digs. Fellow junior Georgia Pool also recorded a team-best 11 digs and senior Farah Elgala led the squad with four blocks in two sets of action.

The Garnet Chargers had trouble at the net against a talented Cal Lutheran team, as the Regals put down 51 kills in three sets and also finished the match with 15 blocks. Kira Mortensen had a rare double-double with 10 blocks and 10 kills on .600 hitting, followed by Sophia Muller with nine kills and six blocks.

Union stayed close with CLU for the start of the opening frame, using a McGrath kill and an ace by first-year Allie Kronenberg to get within a point at 13-12. However, the Regals closed on a 12-3 run that included five kills and six blocks to start the match with a win. The second set followed a similar script, with Union holding a 14-13 advantage before CLU registered 12 of the final 16 points to take a two-set edge.

The third set was the most even of the match, featuring 16 ties and six lead changes. Neither side led by more than two points after the first five points of the frame, with the last multi-point lead coming at 23-21 in favor of the Regals. Union tied the score at 23 thanks to a Pinciaro kill and a block by Kronenberg and sophomore Shelby McKim, and kills by Pinciaro and McGrath staved off a match point and gave Union a set point of its own. However, CLU finished on a 4-1 run, getting two kills each from Caitlin Murphy and Alex Hayes to complete the sweep.

Union finished the day hitting .067 with 28 kills and 20 errors, while Cal Lutheran hit .256 with 51 kills and 20 miscues.

Union will return to the Capital Region next weekend for a Friday night match at Russell Sage College beginning at 6 p.m. in Albany.
