SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College field hockey team came back from a pair of two-goal deficits to tie the game in the fourth period and eventually win a thrilling shootout to defeat Hartwick College by a 4-3 score on Wednesday evening at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
Sophomore
Maddie Greco extended her goal scoring streak to six games with the game-tying goal in the fourth period, while sophomore
Rachel Ostiguy and first-year
Bobbi Serino both scored as well for Union (6-2).
Greco tied the game with 5:47 remaining with her ninth goal of the season, taking a feed from senior
Shaelyn Kelley and sending the ball home from one knee in front of the Hartwick cage.
After the two teams played 20 minutes of scoreless overtime, the game went to penalty strokes. Greco set the tone with a goal for Union on the first attempt, but Hartwick's Ashley Tricarico evened the score at one. The goalies took over after that, as sophomore
Marion Stuntz and Hartwick's Ava Reynolds both stopped three straight attempts to keep their teams in the game. However, sophomore
Reese Fendelet converted Union's fifth chance to regain the lead and Stuntz made one more stop on Danielle Hand to finish off the victory.
Stuntz came on at halftime and made one save on two on-target attempts over the final 50:00 of the game to earn the win. Junior
Sophie Brady made one save over the opening 30 minutes for the home team.
Makenzie Kensel got the scoring started for the Hawks in the seventh minute and then doubled the visitors' lead in the 24th minute. Union got one back before halftime thanks to Serino, who took an Ostiguy pass and netted her fourth of the season less than two minutes later. Tricarico regained Hartwick's two-goal edge 3:30 into the third quarter, but again Union had a quick response thanks to Ostiguy's first of the year just 108 seconds later off a pass from sophomore
Amy Vytopilova, setting the stage for the fourth-quarter comeback and shootout win.
Hartwick finished the game with a slight 8-7 edge in shots and Union led in penalty corners by a 10-6 margin.
Union will look to keep the momentum going into the start of Liberty League play on Saturday at 1 p.m. at #18 Ithaca College.
