Women's Hockey Falls Short 2-1 to Dartmouth

HANOVER, N.H. - The Union College women's hockey team fell short, 2-1, to Dartmouth College Friday night at Thompson Arena.

First-year Karianne Engelbert scored a goal on the power play for the Garnet Chargers. Junior Stephanie Bourque and senior Paige Greco assisted on the goal.

Both teams had near even chances in the first period with Dartmouth holding a 7 to 6 edge in shots. The Big Green had two power play opportunities while the Garnet Chargers had one but neither team was able to capitalize, leaving the score tied at 0-0 at the end of the period.

In the second, Dartmouth broke the scoreless tie 1:31 into the period. Caroline Appleyard deflected a shot from Meredith Jensen in the slot, sending the puck into the back of the net.

In the next 13 minutes of action, the Garnet Chargers killed off a penalty and blocked three shots while senior goaltender Sophie Matsoukas saved six shots to keep the score locked at 1-0.

A roughing penalty on Dartmouth at 14:20 of the second period gave Engelbert the opportunity to score on the power play.

After winning the faceoff, Greco passed the puck back to Bourque who walked the blue line and fired a shot into traffic. The puck deflected off of Engelbert, and she was able to knock the rebound home.

Dartmouth fired three more shots, while Union had two in the next 4:30 of action, but neither team converted, keeping the game tied at 1 a piece at the end of the middle frame.

Just 50 seconds into the final period, Dartmouth netted the game winning goal.

Cally Dixon picked up a loose puck at the bottom of the left circle and sent the puck into the back of the net.

The Garnet Chargers had one more power play opportunity and 10 shots, including a Grade A chance by Engelbert, on net before pulling Matsoukas with 1:20 remaining, but were unable to convert.

Union was able to get three shots off on net during 6 on 5 action but could not bury one home.

The Garnet Chargers are back in action tomorrow afternoon as they travel to Cambridge, Massachusetts, to face the Harvard Crimson. Puck drop is set for 3:00 pm.
