SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Sophomore
Tanner Tedesco hit the go-ahead three-pointer with 1:02 remaining to lead the Union College men's basketball team to a much-needed 69-66 comeback victory over Skidmore College in a Liberty League matchup on Friday night at Williamson Sports and Recreation Center.
The win keeps Union (9-9, 5-6 Liberty League) in a tie for sixth place in the Liberty League with Clarkson University, one game back of St. Lawrence University and Hobart College in fourth.
Tedesco scored 12 of his team-leading 18 points after halftime for the Garnet Chargers, finishing the game 7-of-11 from the field to go with six rebounds and three assists. Classmate
Matthew Garside chipped in 11 points and fellow sophomores
Jack Plesser and
Jaden Jauregui added 10 points apiece, while classmate
Brendan Reid grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to go with seven points.
Aidan Roy scored a game-high 27 points to pace Skidmore (5-13, 1-10 Liberty League).
Roy singlehandedly carried Skidmore on an 11-2 run to start the evening, forcing Union to play catch-up from the very beginning. The Thoroughbred lead grew to as many as 12 at 16-4 after five straight points from Joey Skoric, but a pair of threes from junior
Christian Dufort and one from first-year
Will Yakoobian helped to keep the visitors in the contest. The Garnet Chargers got within seven at the break thanks to a Garside triple that made the score 40-33 in favor of the home team.
Union outscored Skidmore 16-9 over the first six minutes of the second half to even the score, thanks to six points each from Tedesco and Plesser, and took its first lead of the night soon after on a Yakoobian layup. Four straight points by Jauregui and a Tedesco trey built up the visitors' largest lead of the night at 64-60 with 5:39 remaining.
After Skidmore scored six straight points to take back the lead at 66-64 with 4:20 left, Union buckled down defensively and did not allow the Thoroughbreds to score again, as Skidmore went 0-for-5 from the field and had one turnover the rest of the way. A Garside free throw with 1:58 left got the visitors within a point at 66-65, before Tedesco connected from long range on the next possession to put Union ahead 68-66 with 62 seconds left. After missed chances at both ends, Union forced another miss in the final 10 seconds and Reid grabbed the rebound before sinking one free throw. A last-second three by Roy was off the mark to give Union the win.
The Garnet Chargers earned the win thanks to 46.7 percent (14 of 30) shooting in the second half, while limiting the Thoroughbreds to 25.8 percent shooting (8 of 31) over the final 20 minutes. Union finished the game at 41.0 percent (25 of 61) from the field, compared to 35.8 percent (24 of 67) for Skidmore.
Union will look to keep the momentum going tomorrow with a 4 p.m. matchup at Ithaca College.
