Third-Period Blitz Leads Field Hockey Past William Smith 5-2

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College field hockey team scored three times in the decisive third period to break away from William Smith College and finish off Homecoming and Family Weekend with a decisive 5-2 victory on Saturday evening at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

Senior Megan Dorsey, junior Rachel Ostiguy and sophomore Bobbi Serino led Union (8-6, 3-1 Liberty League) with a goal and an assist apiece, while junior Maddie Greco and sophomore Maggie Monaghan both scored as well for the home team. Greco's goal was the 46th of her career, tying her with Jessica Trotter '07 for the most in program history and surpassing Trotter for sole possession of the school's career points record with 102.

Union dominated play for large portions of the day on Saturday, finishing with a 24-8 edge in shots and an 18-6 advantage in on-target attempts. The Garnet Chargers also took 11 penalty corners to the Herons' four on the way to scoring the most goals against William Smith in the programs' 42 all-time meetings.

The home team outshot William Smith (6-7, 1-2 Liberty League) by a 15-1 margin in the opening 30 minutes, taking a 1-0 lead into halftime. With under a minute to go in the first period, Dorsey sent a restart into the arc where Ostiguy was waiting for a beautiful tip up and over goalie Olivia Terranova for her fourth goal of the season.

After the Herons tied the game early in the third, Union responded with three goals in less than six minutes to quickly regain control. Dorsey put her team back in front 1:27 after the WSC goal, taking a Serino pass and firing a shot through traffic for her fourth of the year. Less than five minutes later it was Serino's turn, netting her first of the season from Ostiguy to double the lead. Greco put a cap on the run 61 seconds after Serino, one-timing a pass from junior Amy Vytopilova into the set for her record-tying tally.

Monaghan made it a 5-1 game two minutes into the fourth frame with her fourth of the year before William Smith scored one later in the period to get back within three.

Sitting in second place in the conference standings with three matches remaining, Union will be back in action on Friday with another big Liberty League matchup against Skidmore College beginning at 4 p.m. at Frank Bailey Field.
