SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Three second-half goals propelled the Union College women's soccer team to a commanding 3-1 victory over the Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon at College Park Field during Homecoming and Family Weekend.
The first half saw both teams register six shots apiece, but neither side converted as the match remained scoreless heading into halftime.
The Garnet Chargers opened the scoring four minutes into the second frame when junior
Taylor Bovardi sent a cross into the 18-yard box from the right flank. Senior
Vanessa Jorgensen settled the bouncing ball and fired it into the left side of the net.
Bovardi doubled Union's lead 10 minutes later, capitalizing on a feed from Jorgensen. Jorgensen delivered a through ball into the box, where Bovardi controlled it and buried a shot into the right corner.
The Tigers pulled within one in the 62nd minute as Alexa Marsh struck a 30-yard shot into the bottom-right corner of the net.
However, Union secured the 3-1 win in the 76th minute when senior
Sophia Surber chipped a pass to sophomore
Julia Bancheri, who beat the Tigers' goalkeeper and slotted the ball into the left side of the net.
Senior goalkeeper
Rachel Berliner played all 90 minutes, recording three saves.
Jorgensen's goal and assist marked her first career multi-point game, while Bovardi notched her third multi-point game of the season and the fourth of her career.
Union steps out of Liberty League play to wrap up its non-conference schedule at Hamilton College on Tuesday. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
