Union Advances to Ice Breaker Final After Win Over Saint Anselm

SCHENECTADY N.Y. - Six different goal scorers propelled the Union College women's hockey team to a 7–5 victory over Saint Anselm on Friday afternoon at M&T Bank Center, advancing the Garnet Chargers to the Ice Breaker Tournament Final against #1 Wisconsin.

Junior Emma Fulawka opened the scoring for the Garnet Chargers with an unassisted goal, followed by first-year Megan Duplantie's first tally half way through the opening period. Junior Maddie Leaney and sophomore Giavanna Mancy picked up assists on the play.

Union (4-1-2) continued to roll in the second period as sophomore Karianne Engelbert struck first, assisted by junior Quinn Dunkle, before junior Mikayla Blomquist added an unassisted goal. The Garnet Chargers closed out the scoring with three third-period goals from Leaney, senior Greta Kropp (assisted by Blomquist and first-year Kaitlyn Toner), and Duplantie, who netted her second of the night with helpers from Engelbert and Leaney.

Union went straight to work in the opening period, striking first just four minutes in as junior Emma Fulawka capitalized on a rebound from her own initial shot. Seven minutes later, first-year Megan Duplantie doubled the lead midway through the frame on a point shot by Mancy, set up by Leaney. Union dominated early, outshooting the Hawks 20 to eight in the opening period.

Engelbert struck just one minute into the second period on a wraparound. Nine minutes later, Blomquist forced a turnover and deked Saint Anselm's goalie, and planted the puck into the back of the net to make it 4-0.

In the third period, Leaney extended the lead with a spinning shot that squeaked past the goaltender before Kropp buried a rebound from Blomquist's initial attempt from a point shot from Toner.

A Union penalty at 10:33 of the third helped spark a Saint Anselm rally, as the Hawks capitalized on the power play and added two more quick strikes from the slot to cut the deficit to 6–3. Two minutes later, Saint Anselm scored again on a breakaway to make it 6–4.

Union answered moments later when Engelbert circled behind the net and fed Duplantie in the slot for her second of the night to seal the win. Saint Anselm added a late tip-in goal, but Union held on for the 7–5 victory.

The Garnet Chargers wrap up the Ice Breaker Tournament on Saturday at 3:37 p.m., facing #1 Wisconsin in the championship game.
