Football Wins Third Straight, 28-6 over Buffalo State

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Senior Patch Flanagan threw for a touchdown and ran for two more to lead the Union College football team its third straight win, a 28-6 victory over Buffalo State University on Saturday evening at Coyer Field.

Union (3-2, 2-0 Liberty League) rushed for 241 yards on the evening, led by Flanagan with 120 yards and two scores on 15 carries. Sophomore Jah'Cire Jones (46 yards), senior DJ Wright (41 yards and a touchdown) and junior Michael Dinardo (34 yards) also pitched in on the ground as well. Senior Gil Rivera led the air attack with six catches for 64 yards and a touchdown.

The defensive unit finished the game with five sacks and 11 tackles for loss, led by junior Daniel O'Leary with 2.5 TFLs. Senior Ryan Grenier and sophomore John Droggitis led the team with eight tackles apiece, with Grenier recording five solo tackles to pace the visitors.

After both teams punted on their opening drives, Union went 63 yards on 11 plays to break the ice. The Garnet Chargers converted a pair of third downs early in the drive on a 15-yard pass to junior Owen Corrigan and a Flanagan four-yard run, and Flanagan finished the drive with a seven-yard run.

Union found the endzone again on its next drive thanks largely to the legs of Wright, who ran the ball four times for 34 yards, including a nine-yard run for his first touchdown of the year.

A defensive stand held Buffalo State (1-4, 1-1 Liberty League) off the scoreboard on the next drive despite its first red-zone visit, as Union held the Bengals to one net yard on three plays inside the five-yard line to force a turnover on downs.

Buffalo State's lone big play of the game came early in the third quarter, as a 53-yard touchdown from Amir Cameron to Noah Kimble got the home team on the board. But Union came right back with a 69-yard touchdown march, finished off by a Rivera 23-yard touchdown catch. The Garnet Chargers then put the game out of reach on their next possession, getting rushes of 11 yards from Flanagan and seven from Wright before Flanagan went 41 yards on the next play to make the score 28-6.

After the Union defense forced another turnover on downs, Union methodically took over nine minutes off the clock with a 16-play, 66-yard march that did not result in points but effectively ended the game.

Winners of three in a row and still unbeaten in conference play, Union will return home next Saturday for a Homecoming and Family Weekend clash with Hobart College beginning at 1 p.m. at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
