Duplantie Scores Twice in 2-2 Tie to Merrimack

SCHNECTADY, NY. - First year Megan Duplantie powered the Garnet Chargers's offense scoring her first two collegiate goals in the Union College women's hockey team's two to two tie versus Merrimack College Saturday afternoon at M&T Bank Center.

In the first period, both teams recorded 10 shots, trading a couple quality chances, but Union's Monja Wagner and Merrimack's Adreanna Doucette stood tall in net to send the game into the first intermission scoreless.

In the second period, Merrimack nearly struck early on a breakaway chance in the opening three minutes, but the shot went wide. The Warriors broke the deadlock four minutes later when Kathryn Karo buried a rebound on an initial shot from McKenzie Cerrato to put Merrimack ahead 1-0.

Union generated only five more shots over the next 13 minutes of play but still edged Merrimack 7-6 in shots during the period. The Garnet Chargers had one power-play opportunity but could not convert, and spent much of the frame on the defensive end killing off three Merrimack power plays.

Two early Merrimack penalties four minutes into the third period provided offensive momentum for Union, as Duplantie scored her first collegiate goal on a five-on-three advantage. Duplantie picked up a loose rebound off an initial shot by sophomore Jill Willis and fired the puck into the right side of the net to tie the game at one.

However, the Warriors regained the lead on the power play nine minutes later when Emma Pfeffer put home a rebound off the end boards following a shot from the slot that went wide.

Duplantie tied the game with 50 seconds left in regulation, netting her second goal of the night by picking up a loose puck and firing a shot into the left side of the net to send the contest into overtime.

In the extra frame, Union generated four shots on goal to Merrimack's one but could not convert. The Warriors then netted back-to-back goals in the shootout while Union was held scoreless to secure the shootout win.

Wagner made 24 saves on the evening.

Union continues its stretch of 10 straight home games to start the season with a weekend series against Hockey East foe New Hampshire. Puck drop is set for 6:30 p.m. on Friday, October 10 for President's Kiss's inauguration game, and 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 11.
