CANTON, N.Y. – Sophomore
Eamonn Kelley's first-half goal proved to be the difference-maker as the Union College men's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over St. Lawrence University and clinched a home post-season game in the regular-season finale on Saturday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field.
With the win, Union (7-5-5, 4-1-4) secured fourth place in the Liberty League standings with 16 points, two ahead of Clarkson University in fifth place and one behind third-place Vassar College. The Garnet Chargers finish the regular season with just one conference loss, the first time since 2010 that the team has gone through the Liberty League gauntlet with only one loss.
Despite the Saints edging Union in shots, 6-4, in the first half, the Garnet Chargers broke through in the 26th minute. Kelley capitalized on a feed from senior
Grant Della Rocca, firing home the eventual game-winning goal. Union added two more shots before halftime, including an attempt from Kelley that was stopped by St. Lawrence goalkeeper Zach Amato.
The Saints pressed hard in the second half, outshooting Union 9-1, but senior goalkeeper
Jacob Perry came up big, making four of his five saves in the second half to preserve his fourth shutout win of the season and increase the team's unbeaten streak to four matches.
Union will open up Liberty League Tournament play on Tuesday, hosting fifth-seeded Clarkson University at College Park Field for a 4:00 p.m. kick off.
