PRINCETON, N.J. – The Union College women's ice hockey team fell 5–2 to the Princeton Tigers on Saturday afternoon at Hobey Baker Memorial Rink.
Junior
Emma Fulawka opened the scoring for the Garnet Chargers (4-6-2, 0-4-0) with her third goal of the season, while first-year
Jill Willis netted her second of the year on the power play. Sophomore
Giavanna Mancy earned the primary assist on Fulawka's tally. Sophomore
Karianne Engelbert and senior captain
Stephanie Bourque assisted on Willis's power-play goal.
In the opening frame, Princeton (3-3-0, 3-1-0) outshot Union 16–13, but both teams generated quality chances. Junior
Maddie Leaney fired a strong shot on net just three minutes in, and the Garnet Chargers continued to apply pressure during their first power play at 5:12. Union earned another advantage at 16:21 of the first and nearly converted when first-year
Peyton O'Neill rang a shot off the crossbar. Junior blueliner
Quinn Dunkle and Bourque closed out the period with additional looks, but Union couldn't break through again before intermission.
Princeton scored their first goal of the game just 45 seconds into the second period and added another two minutes later. Issy Wunder fed Mackenzie Alexander for the first goal, and Catie Collins doubled the advantage with a shot through traffic that deflected off of Hannah Fetterolf into the back of the net.
Union responded quickly, cutting the deficit to one just a minute and a half later. Rhéaume kicked aside a shot with her pad, and Mancy picked up the rebound, went coast to coast, and fired a shot that Fulawka buried on the rebound.
However, Princeton scored their third and fourth goals of the game four minutes later as both Gabby Kim and Alexander fired shots through traffic into the back of the net to give Princeton a 4-1 lead.
A Princeton for tripping just three minutes into the third period allowed Union to score their second goal of the game. Bourque fired an initial shot from the top of the circles, while Engelbert and Willis each took several jabs at the rebound before Willis pushed it across the goal line.
However, the Tigers scored their fifth goal of the night at 7:54 in the period to secure the 5-2 win as Teja Gatfield passed the puck to Sawyer Felming who rifled it into the back of the net.
The Garnet Chargers pulled Rhéaume just over a minute left to go in the game searching for more goals but were unsuccessful. Rhéaume concluded the game with 37 saves.
Union returns to action traveling to rival Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (1-10-0, 0-4-0) on Friday for a 3:00 p.m. puck drop before hosting the Engineers on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. puck drop at M&T Bank Center.
