Women's Hockey Falls in Overtime to #13/12 Colgate

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -  Junior Maddie Leaney tallied her fourth goal of the weekend, while sophomore Klara Kenttälä added another as the Union College Women's Hockey team battled #13/12 Colgate University to a 3–2 overtime loss on Saturday afternoon at M&T Bank Center.

Leaney netted her goal early in the second period on an unassisted tally. Kenttälä then buried her third goal of the season early in the third period to even the score, with classmate Jill Willis earning the assist.

Colgate struck twice in the opening period, scoring a pair of goals just 1:19 apart. Sara Stewart and Casey Borgiel both found the back of the net through traffic to give the Raiders an early two-goal lead. Colgate controlled the opening frame, outshooting the Garnet Chargers 13–3.

Leaney scored just under two minutes into the second period, forcing a turnover and deked Colgate's goaltender to tuck the puck inside the right post to cut the deficit in half. The Garnet Chargers carried the momentum for the remainder of the second period, outshooting the Raiders 10–6 and earning a power-play opportunity, but could not find the equalizer.

Just 42 seconds into the third period, Kenttälä potted the equalizer. Willis made a nifty move past a defender, fired a shot, and jammed at the rebound before it popped loose for Kenttälä to tuck inside the right post. Despite being outshot 14–7 in the third, Union goaltender Monja Wagner came up with crucial saves to force overtime.

A Union penalty in overtime proved costly, as Colgate's Elyssa Beiderman netted the game-winning goal with 35 seconds remaining in the extra period, rifling a shot into the top-left corner to seal the 3–2 victory for the Raiders. Wagner made 36 saves in net for the Garnet Chargers.

Union concludes its non-conference slate next weekend, welcoming Atlantic Hockey Association member and inaugural program, University of Delaware, for a weekend series. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Friday and 3:00 p.m. on Saturday at M&T Bank Center.
