ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Union College women's soccer team's season came to a close in the first round of the 2025 Liberty League Playoffs, as third-seeded Rochester Institute of Technology edged sixth-seeded Union, 1–0, on Tuesday afternoon at Tiger Stadium.
The Garnet Chargers outshot the Tigers, 5–4, and generated three quality scoring chances while holding Rochester without a shot on goal in the first half. Senior
Grace Beazoglou and sophomore
Addison MacDonald both tested RIT goalkeeper Emily Sanchez with low drives in the 19th and 36th minutes, but Sanchez made the saves. Junior
Taylor Bovardi added another chance in the final minute and a half, but the Garnet Chargers couldn't capitalize.
Union maintained its momentum in the second half, outshooting the Tigers 10–3. Junior
Ashley Sheldon, and seniors
Vanessa Jorgensen and
Anabelle Thomas each produced early chances within the first nine minutes of play, but Sanchez continued to stand tall in net.
RIT netted the eventual game-winner 10 minutes into the half, as Elena Onodera finished off a feed from Valeria Luzio and Bella Coccio.
Union pressed for an equalizer in the next 35 minutes of action, firing four more shots, including one on goal but Sanchez held firm to secure the 1–0 victory for the Tigers.
Despite the loss, the Garnet Chargers capped one of their most successful seasons in recent years. Union made its first Liberty League Tournament appearance since 2021 and earned nine wins for the third time in head coach
Karen Perron's five-year tenure. The team's four conference victories marked its best Liberty League showing since Perron's first season, while senior forward
Anabelle Thomas (seven goals) and junior
Taylor Bovardi (seven assists) led one of the league's most balanced attacks. Union also boasted a top-three defensive unit anchored by goalkeepers
Rachel Berliner and
Maya Koster, combining for a 0.72 goals-against average.
This season also marked a milestone for Union Athletics as a whole—the women's soccer program joined men's soccer, field hockey, and volleyball in postseason play for the first time since 2009, underscoring a banner fall for the Garnet Chargers.
