POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The second-seeded Union College field hockey team scored twice in the fourth period in an attempt to mount a late-game comeback, but the Garnet Chargers came up just short in falling to top-seeded Vassar College by a 4-2 score in the Liberty League championship game on Sunday afternoon at Weinberg Field.
Senior
Megan Dorsey and junior
Maddie Greco had the goals for Union (13-8), with Greco adding an assist for a three-point day.
Vassar (13-6) got off to a fast start on Sunday, scoring just 2:39 into the contest on a Karina Hoffman tally. Union managed just one shot in the opening period, as the home team controlled play in the midfield.
Vassar continued its momentum into the second stanza, taking the first 10 shots of the period. The 10th shot of that run doubled the Brewer lead on Sydney Yu's tip-in with 4:53 remaining in the second. The visitors took the final three shots of the period to gain some momentum headed into halftime, but still trailed by a pair. Senior
Sophie Brady made four saves in the period to limit the Brewers to one score.
The third period followed a similar script for the Garnet Chargers, as sophomore
Tess Parker made five saves to keep the deficit at two but the offense managed just one shot on goal.
The offensive floodgates opened for both teams in a wild fourth period that saw each team score twice. Union got on the board just over five minutes into the period on the team's third corner of the frame, when Dorsey took a Greco insert and fired a shot into the back of the net for her sixth goal of the season and 22nd of her career, moving her into sole possession of sixth place on the school's career points list with 73.
Vassar regained its two-goal lead less than two minutes later on a Zoe Robinson score, but Union immediately responded less than 30 seconds after that when Greco pounced on the rebound of a shot by first-year
Katelyn Birnbaum and netted her 16th goal of the season. The goal moved Greco into fifth on the school single-season goals list and into a tie for second on the single-season points ledger, behind only her record-setting 44 points from a year ago.
Playing with momentum for the first time all afternoon, the game turned again four minutes later, when a non-call on a collision at midfield resulted in a breakaway opportunity for Vassar's Sophia Beseth, who scored to regain her team's two-goal lead with 3:31 remaining. Union outshot Vassar 7-3 in the final period and took the frame's only four penalty corners, but was unable to complete the comeback.
Vassar ended the day with a 23-12 edge in shots overall. Brady made four saves in the first half and Parker stopped five shots over the final 30 minutes for the Garnet Chargers, while Grace Wiley had four saves for the Brewers.
Despite the loss, the 2025 season was yet another filled with accomplishments for the Garnet Chargers, including the first conference tournament win in program history and first taste of postseason success since 1988. Dorsey, Brady and classmate
Kat Bruun will graduate as the winningest class in Union field hockey history and have helped set the stage for the Garnet Chargers to make another run at a tournament title in 2026.
