Women's Hockey Falls in Overtime 2-1 to #12/13 Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. - The Union College women's hockey team fell 2-1 in overtime to #12/13 Princeton University Friday night at Hobey Baker Memorial Rink in Princeton, New Jersey.

Union (12-20-1) remains in ninth place in the ECAC conference standings. Three points ahead of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (13-17-1) and five and half points behind Brown University (14-11-3).

Sophomore Maddie Leaney scored the lone goal for the Garnet Chargers, while senior captain Emma Hebert tied the career record for most games played and the Ironman streak at 136 games. Hebert is set to break both records tomorrow afternoon against #10/9 Quinnipiac.

Just over four minutes into the first period, Princeton earned a power play opportunity but were unsuccessful in capitalizing as senior goaltender Sophie Matsoukas made two outstanding saves to keep the game scoreless.

Five minutes later, the Garnet Chargers earned a power play opportunity but failed to put the puck into net.

Senior Ashley Adams had an excellent breakaway opportunity with five minutes to go into the first period, but did not convert. Union finished the first frame with two additional good looks.

Seven minutes into the second period, Princeton was awarded their second power play of the evening but Union shut down Princeton keeping the game locked at zero.

The Tigers outshot the Garnet Chargers 10-4 in the middle stanza, but Union's defense remained strong, limiting Princeton's opportunities while generating some solid chances of their own.

Princeton broke the scoreless tie just over four minutes into the third period. Issy Wunder skated in and fired a shot from the top of the slot into the top shelf of the net.

However, Princeton's lead was short-lived as Leaney tied the game just 29 seconds later. After picking up a loose puck following a strong effort by first-year Klara Kenttälä to knock the Tigers off the puck, Leaney skated in from the left side, cut across from behind the goal line to the top of the crease, and slid the puck through Princeton's goaltender's five-hole into the back of the net.

For the next 15 minutes, both teams generated excellent opportunities, with Union edging Princeton in shots 9-8 in the third period. The Garnet Chargers continued their strong defensive play, shutting down the Tigers, while Matsoukas came up big again with two key saves at the end to force overtime.

Just over 1:50 into overtime, Wunder netted the game winning goal. After receiving a cross ice pass from Gabby Kim, Wunder fired a shot from the right side of the slot into the right side of the net.

Matsoukas delivered a solid performance and finished the game with 33 saves.

Union concludes the 2024-25 regular season in Hamden, Connecticut tomorrow against the #10/9 Quinnipiac Bobcats. Puck drop is set for 3:00 pm.
