Men's Basketball Tripped Up at St. Lawrence

CANTON, N.Y. – The Union College men's basketball team had its five-game winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon by St. Lawrence University, falling to the Saints by the score of 74-50 at Berkman Gymnasium.

Union (13-10, 9-7 Liberty League) does not drop in the standings despite the loss, remaining in a fourth-place tie with Hobart College but now just one game ahead of St. Lawrence (14-8, 8-8 Liberty League) in sixth place with two games left in the regular season.

Sophomore Jaden Jauregui tied for the game high with 15 points in 20 minutes off the bench, followed in double figures by classmate Jack Plesser (12) and junior Christian Dufort (10). Plesser also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to just miss his second double-double of the year.

Aidan McCaulay led four Saints in double figures with 15 points, followed by Dan Anderson with 14 and Gavin McCaulay with 11.

The game got away from Union early on Saturday, as the Saints used a 15-0 run to take an 18-4 lead with 6:24 gone by in the opening half. The visitors trimmed the deficit to 10 at the midway point of the frame after a Jauregui bucket made the score 20-10, but SLU closed the frame on a 10-2 run to take a 37-18 edge into halftime.

The Garnet Chargers shot just 25.0 percent (7 of 28) in the opening half, including an 0-of-11 mark from long range, while allowing the Saints to shoot 50.0 percent (16 of 32) from the field.

Things did not get any easier for Union in the second half, as the visitors could get no closer than 17 after a Plesser basket less than four minutes in. The SLU lead grew to as many as 30 after a Trey Syroka three-point play with 6:31 left in the contest before Union closed on a 12-2 run, helped by 10 points from Jauregui and two from first-year Zach Benmorits.

Union shot 38.7 percent (12 of 31) from the field in the second half to finish the game at 32.2 percent, while St. Lawrence ended the day at 46.0 percent (29 of 63) from the field.

Union will look to end the regular season strong with two huge games at home next weekend, beginning on Friday against RIT at 7:30 p.m.
