ITHACA N.Y. - Senior goaltender
Sophie Matsoukas broke the all-time saves record making 39 saves in the 3-0 loss to the top seeded and #3 Cornell University in the first game of the best-of-three quarterfinal series at Lynah Rink Friday night.
The previous career saves record had stood for a decade and was held by Shenae Lundberg '15, who made 1,110 saves in her senior season and finished her career with 3,023 stops. With 39 saves tonight, Matsoukas has now totaled 3,030 career saves, surpassing Lundberg's mark.
Although the Garnet Chargers had two power-play opportunities, Cornell applied heavy pressure, outshooting Union 13-1 in the opening period. The Big Red managed to sneak in their first goal of the night with 1:22 remaining in the frame firing a shot from the bottom of the right circle into the top shelf of the net.
In the early minutes of the second period, Matsoukas made a SportsCenter Top 10 highlight-worthy save to keep the game at 1-0. Cornell continued to outshoot Union, 18-6, in the middle frame, but the Garnet Chargers played strong defense to keep the Big Red at bay. Union also upped the tempo, generating quality scoring chances in the latter half of the period. Despite both teams' efforts, the period remained scoreless.
Cornell doubled its lead just 4:20 into the final stanza, scoring on a shot from the top of the crease. Over the next 13 minutes, Cornell outshot Union 6-4 and capitalized on the power play, tipping the puck into the back of the net for their third goal of the evening.
The Garnet Charges pulled Matsoukas with two minutes remaining in regulation for an extra attacker searching for goals, but were unsuccessful in putting one home.
Union continues the best-of-three quarter final series at Lynah Rink tomorrow. Puck drop is set for 3:00 pm for game two.
