Women's Hockey Falls 2-1 to #5 Colgate

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Union women's hockey team fell 2-1 to Colgate University Friday night at Messa Rink.

With the loss, Union (12-18-1) remains in ninth place in the ECAC conference standings four points ahead of RPI (12-16-2) and three and half points behind Brown (13-10-3).

Junior Mallory Mauracher extended her goal streak to two games netting the Garnet Chargers lone goal of the evening. Sophomore Kendal Davidson and senior Maren Friday were credited with the assists.

Union opened the first period with offensive pressure registering four great opportunities on net in the first four minutes.

At 14:55 in the first frame of action, the Garnet Chargers capitalized on their offensive momentum. After receiving a pass from Friday, Davidson fired a shot from the right side of the blueline into net front traffic and Mauracher tipped the puck into the net.

Although Union and Colgate both earned a power play opportunity and were tied in shots at 13 at the end of the first period, neither team capitalized on additional opportunities.

In the second period, Union and Colgate both had great chances, with Colgate just edging Union in shots, 12-7. The Raiders were able to squeak one into the net with four minutes to go in the middle frame. Sarah Roger retrieved the rebound from a shot and got the puck to Avery Pickering who put it home.

Union started the final frame of action on the power play, but did not convert. A penalty on Union nine minutes later allowed Colgate to net the game winning goal. The rebound from Elyssa Biederman's shot came out Emma Pais in the bottom of the left circle, and Pais fired it home.

Union continued to battle hard and pulled senior goaltender Sophie Matsoukas in the dying seconds left in regulation but were unsuccessful in netting the equalizer. Matsoukas finished the game with 29 saves.

The Garnet Chargers are back in action tomorrow against #4 Cornell University celebrating the senior class, Alumnae Day, and Union women's hockey's last home game at Messa Rink. Puck drop is set for 3:00 pm.
