PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Twelve different players recorded at least one goal and 14 players had at least one point as the Union College women's lacrosse team started the 2025 season with a 19-4 victory over Plattsburgh State University on Saturday afternoon the PSU Field House Complex.
Junior
Lana Mickelson and sophomore
Hannah Compa led the way for Union (1-0) with three goals, with Mickelson adding an assist for a game-high four points. Sophomore
Gillian Joseph and first-year
Stella Del Papa both joined Mickelson in recording four points with two goals and two assists apiece. In addition to Del Papa, classmates
Maddie Dineen,
Caroline Murphy and
Teagan Steele scored their first collegiate goals on the afternoon.
The defensive effort was led by junior
Christina Guanci with four ground balls and three caused turnovers and first-year
Kate Loughney, who also grabbed four grounders and caused a pair of turnovers.
The Union offensive attack started out strong on Saturday, scoring seven goals in the first quarter and adding six more in the second to take command early. Goals by Compa and junior
Maddie Doyle helped Union stay even through the first seven-plus minutes, but with the score tied at two, the visitors rattled off nine straight goals to take an 11-2 lead late in the second frame. Joseph and Mickelson led the charge with two goals apiece, while Del Papa added her first collegiate goal and two helpers during the run. Del Papa's second of the game put Union up 13-3 at the break.
After taking 26 shots in the first half, Union dialed down the offense in the final 30 minutes. Senior
Greta Maurer scored her second of the game to start the third quarter and, after the Cardinals got one back, Union netted the final five goals of the contest. Steele ended the third with her first collegiate tally, while the visitors got goals from Mickelson, Compa, Murphy and sophomore
Cecilia Sinopoli to finish off the victory.
Junior
Sydney Widlitz got the start in goal for Union and made two saves over the first 30 minutes before first-year
Sierra Harris made two stops over the final 30 minutes. The Garnet Chargers finished the afternoon with a 37-17 edge in shots.
Union will return to action next Saturday with a 2 p.m. game against SUNY Geneseo at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
