Wagner Named to Swiss National Team for 2025 IIHF World Championships

ZURICH – Sophomore Monja Wagner of the Union College women's hockey team will represent her home country at the 2025 IIHF Women's World Championships as one of 24 players named to the 2025 Switzerland Women's National Team, the Swiss Ice Hockey Federation announced on Friday.

This marks Wagner's first time participating on the national team. She is one of only three NCAA women's hockey players representing Switzerland, alongside Nicole Vallario of the University of St. Thomas and Laura Zimmermann of St. Cloud State University.

"This is a huge milestone for me, and I couldn't be more proud to represent my country," said Wagner. "It's been a long journey, and I'm grateful for everyone who has been part of it. I'm excited for what's next."

Wagner, Vallario, and Zimmerman will be teammates with notable figures including Alina Muller of the PWHL's Boston Fleet, in the annual international competition, which is set for Wednesday, April 9 to Sunday, April 20 in České Budejovice, Czechia. Switzerland will compete in Group A alongside the United States, Canada, Czechia and Finland, while Group B includes Germany, Sweden, Japan, Hungary and Norway.

Wagner has previously represented Switzerland on two other occasions as she participated in both the 2019 and 2020 IIHF World Championships with Switzerland's U-18 Team in Japan and Slovakia, respectively.

Wagner has appeared in 11 games for Union over her first two collegiate seasons, recording a 2.81 goals against average and .918 save percentage. Four of her five appearances as a first-year came against nationally ranked competition, beginning with a career-high 34 saves in her collegiate debut at St. Cloud State. Four of her six games as a sophomore also came against nationally ranked foes, led by a 31-save effort in a 2-2 tie with SCSU, and she also registered her first career shutout by recording 28 saves in a 1-0 victory against the University of Vermont.
