Garnet Chargers Drop Two Matches on Day Two of Trip

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Union College men's tennis team dropped a pair of matches on day two of its Spring Break trip, falling to Freed-Hardeman University and ITA #34 Hamilton College by the same 6-1 score on Monday at the USTA National Campus.

Sophomore Daniel Saxe and first-year Vivaan Gupta earned two wins each for Union (2-6) on the day, with both players winning once in singles and doubles play. Senior Austin Gregory and first-year David Wang earned one win each for the Garnet Chargers as well.

Against Freed-Hardeman, Wang and Saxe kept Union from a sweep of doubles play with a 6-3 win at the second-flight over Pablo Poleo and Quentin Ferron. Gupta earned a point for the squad at third singles, as he was leading 4-3 in the second set before Ferron was forced to retire.

Gupta and Gregory started off the afternoon's match against nationally ranked Hamilton with an impressive win at third doubles, making quick work of Anson Anderson and Coby Feldman in a 6-1 victory.

In singles play, Saxe came back to knock off Antonio Chavez in their fifth-singles match, trading 6-3 sets before earning a 10-6 victory in the supertiebreaker. First-year Arhan Gupta came up just short of earning a supertiebreaker win of his own, falling by a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4) score to Nicolas Gritz at sixth singles.

The Garnet Chargers will continue their challenging Spring Break stretch tomorrow with two more matches, taking on Colby College at 12:30 p.m. and Lawrence University at 4 p.m.
