ORLANDO, Fla. – The Union College women's tennis team swept Augustana College by a 7-0 score to finish off a 4-1 Spring Break trip on Wednesday afternoon at the USTA National Campus. The team dropped its first and only match of the week earlier in the day, falling to ITA #28 Carleton College by a 7-0 score.
Four Union players picked up two wins apiece and all six Garnet Charger entries had at least one win to close out the trip against Augustana.
Starting on the doubles court, junior
Sydney Alphabet and first-year
Calista Finkelstein earned a 6-3 third-doubles win over Lily Conn and Allie France, followed by the second-doubles tandem of juniors
Claire Langille and
Skylar Semon defeating Kassidy Anderson and Maripaz Ramirez, 6-2, to clinch the opening point.
Singles play moved very quickly for the Garnet Chargers, with four of the six matches needing only two or fewer games past the minimum. Langille had the best result of the day with a double-bagel win over Conn at sixth singles, followed by Alphabet and Finkelstein finishing their perfect afternoons with matching 6-0, 6-1 wins at the fourth and fifth flights, respectively. First-year
Samantha Jacobs needed only two extra games to get past Colleen Larry with a pair of 6-1 sets in their third-singles matchup.
Semon and classmate
Chara Meidani had to battle a little more at the top two flights, but still came away with straight-set wins. Meidani got past Hannah Colbert at the first flight with a 6-3, 6-4 victory, while Semon stormed back from 1-4 down against Ramirez in the first set to win 7-5 before taking the second, 6-2.
In the first match of the day, Union was unable to pick up any points against a strong nationally-ranked Carleton squad. In doubles play, Finkelstein and Alphabet came one break short in a 7-5 third-flight matchup against Mirian Shteyman and Kat Smiricinschi. Alphabet also came a supertiebreaker short of pulling out a win at fourth singles as well, dropping the first set in a 7-6 (7-3) tiebreaker before rebounding for a 6-4 win in the second set; however, the tiebreaker went the way of Kiley Pickens, 10-3.
Union will return to New York for the remainder of the spring schedule beginning on Thursday, April 3 with a matchup against SUNY Oneonta at 4 p.m. at the Union Tennis Courts.
