Kip Scores 100th Goal, Lynch Stops 21 Shots in Men's Lax Win

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Senior Peter Kip scored a game-high three goals to become the 12th player in program history to record 100 career goals and lead the Union College men's lacrosse team to an 11-6 victory over Muhlenberg College on Saturday afternoon at Scotty Wood Stadium.

Kip's first goal early in the second quarter moved him into triple digits for his career, and his four points also moved him past the 150 mark for his career. The senior's 102 career goals and 152 career points are both three away from entering the all-time top-10 in program history.

Kip was matched for the game-high in goals and points by junior Walker Popko, who scored three goals with an assist of his own. Sophomore Mekhi Taylor added two goals and a helper while senior Hazen Pike recorded a game-high three assists as well for Union (1-3).

Senior Luke McHugh also had another good day at the faceoff X, winning 13-of-18 draws and grabbing a game-high nine ground balls, while sophomore Nick Lynch had a fantastic afternoon in the crease, turning aside a career-high 21 shots and grabbing five ground balls.

Lynch was nearly perfect for Union in the first half, making 12 saves on 13 on-target attempts to allow the visitors to jump out to a 6-1 lead at the break. The sophomore stopped six shots in the first 10 minutes before Union broke through later in the frame, with Taylor scoring twice in 59 seconds to put the Garnet Chargers up 2-0. Lynch added two more saves in an impressive first period to keep Union ahead by a pair.

Kip scored his 100th 2:02 into the second stanza to add to the lead before Muhlenberg finally solved Lynch with 11:03 left on a man-up tally by Aidan Fairweather. However, three more Lynch saves and goals by Kip, sophomore Jack Lucey and senior Henry Quaintance gave the visitors a five-goal edge at the half.

Union continued to increase the pressure in the third quarter, again outscoring Muhlenberg by a 4-1 margin to provide a wide margin. Popko played a role in all four goals, scoring three times and also assisting on junior Emmett Lyne's tally that made the score 10-2 after 45 minutes. Kip added his third of the day 3:05 into the fourth stanza to build up the largest lead of the game before the Mules scored the afternoon's final four goals.

Union finished the game with a 50-38 edge in shots and also corralled 45 ground balls to Muhlenberg's 25, thanks in part to a 14-7 edge in faceoff wins.

The Garnet Chargers will continue their four-game road trip on Tuesday with a matchup at Middlebury College beginning at 4 p.m.
