THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team dropped a Sunday afternoon doubleheader to SUNY Maritime at Reinhart Field. Union fell in seven innings in game one, 6-2, and was defeated 4-1 in game two.
Game One: Maritime 6, Union 2
After a scoreless first inning, Union opened the scoring in the top of the second. Senior
Sam Strazza hit a leadoff single and moved to second after sophomore
Noah DiCaprio drew a walk. A single by senior
Dan Sheeran up the middle drove Strazza home from second for the one-run lead.
Maritime tied it up in the bottom of the third. A leadoff walk and a double to center two batters later knotted the game at one apiece.
Union took a one-run lead in the top of the fourth. Senior
Kyle Zaslaw hit a leadoff double to left field. DiCaprio followed it up with a single to center. A walk by Sheeran loaded the bases. First-year
Dylan Swarts reached first on a fielder's choice and Zaslaw raced home to make it a 2-1 game.
The Privateers responded in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs to take a 3-2 lead. A double with bases loaded saw two runners cross home. The hosts added three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-2 lead.
Junior
Jack Klein started for Union and pitched 3.2 innings with four strikeouts while surrendering three runs on four hits. First-year
Will Nardella pitched two innings and allowed three turns on one hit.
Sophomore
Garrick Godin faced one batter in one-third of an inning and struck him out.
Game Two: Maritime 4, Union 1
The Privateers took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning and never looked back. A double with two runners on followed by an RBI single put Maritime up by two. A wild pitch later in the inning saw the hosts take a three-run lead.
Union responded in the top of the third with a run. Junior
Caleb Miller was hit by a pitch and Swarts singled to shortstop to put two runners on for the Garnet Chargers. Strazza reached on a fielder's choice to first, but a throwing error saw Miller race home from third to put Union on the board.
The Privateers added a run in the third. An RBI single with runners on the corners saw Maritime take a 4-1 lead.
Union loaded the bases in the top of the sixth, but two quick outs shut down the rally.
Senior
Aidan McGee started for the Garnet Chargers and struck out three in three innings of work while surrendering four runs on six hits. Sophomore
Jacob Skarlis allowed one hit and fanned two in two scoreless innings of work. Seniors
Cal Place and
Alex Erickson combined for 2.2 scoreless and hitless innings while striking out three batters.
Union returns home for a mid-week matchup against VTSU Castleton. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Central Park "A" Diamond.
